7 Hair Oiling Mistakes That Will DAMAGE Your Hair

Hair has a significant role in our appearance. And remember, oiling your hair is crucial if you want it to retain its luster and splendor for as long as possible. We hope you will not make these kinds of mistakes regularly. Now, let's examine the seven most typical mistakes we make when oiling our hair.

7 Common Hair Oil Mistakes

1. Not knowing anything about your hair

When using oils, the first thing you have to know is your hair type or hair texture. The techniques and time used for all wavy or straight hair are different from type 3 or type 4. Hereafter knowing the different hair types and textures and knowing what category your hair falls under, you can now choose the right oil for your hair

2. Not knowing the right oils to choose based on your hair consists of different porosity

We have high porosity, low porosity, and medium porosity. To know your hair porosity, all you need to do is to get a cup of room temperature water, put a clean strand of hair in it and see where it falls. If it falls at the top, then that means you probably have low porosity hair. If at the middle, that's medium porosity; if it sinks to the bottom, that's high.

3. Not knowing the difference between moisturizing oils and sealing oils

Moisturizing oils can penetrate the hair shaft. Using it with water or some moisturizing oils consisting of olive oil, coconut oil, and avocado oil is better. Sealing oils lock and seal, so moisture does not penetrate the hair shaft. It sits on top of the hair to add luster and shine. Some sealing oils consist of grape seed oil, jojoba, and Jamaican black castor oil.

I use my growth oils because they consist of herbs, carrier oils, and essential oils that are proving to benefit our scalp and hair follicles. It also consists of moisturizing and sealing oils, so I get to benefit from them as well. But if you just want a single oil and some essential oils for your heart or treatment.

I recommend using avocado, olive, sweet almond, or coconut oil. If you are low porosity, then stay away from coconut oil, and for essential oils, I would recommend Rosemary essential oil. Never apply essential oils directly on your scalp.

4. Using Oil Without Warming It Up

You always have to dilute it with carrier oil and always make sure that you are using natural organic ingredients. When choosing the best oil for your scalp, combine your carrier oil with your essential oil or herb of choice, and then place the mixture in hot water until it is warm.

Make sure the oil isn't extremely hot otherwise you will burn yourself and sky your scalp. We just need it to be warm, heating up the oils and allowing them to penetrate better, especially for low porosity.

5. To avoid putting oil on completely dry hair try

The fifth mistake to avoid is putting oil on completely dry hair. Try to dry your hair first, oils are easier to apply on the hair when completely dry. Especially for type 3 or type 4 hair for this I am speaking from experience with oils on my hair, but again you can always do what works best for you this is why I say every hair texture is totally different for straight hair you will apply oil completely different than the way you will apply oil on curly or kinky hair for straight hair.

You will have to de-tangle your hair first with a brush, before applying your oil to scalp. Starting from the scalp, and massage any oil in, and then coming down on the other hand for curly/kinky hair. I recommend parting your hair in sections and using a moisturizer, spray, or water. Finkle detangles and avoids using tools to tangle your hair.

If your hair is tangled up and you have a lot of knots, just make sure you work in sections to gently apply the oil to your scalp and hair. I personally do hot oil treatments for my scalp and my hair follicles, to benefit from all the vitamins and nutrients within those oils, and for it to just nourish my hair. I use hot oil treatment also to reduce friction and help shared hair to slide out easily. That is why I do not fully detangle my hair with tools, because doing so would just cause unnecessary breakage on kinky/curly hair.

6. ALWAYS make sure you massage your scalp after applying the oil

Make sure that you massage your scalp, or you can massage your scalp while applying the oil to your scalp. According to research, scalp massage increases hair thickness by scratching the cells of the hair follicles. This in turn stimulates the follicles to produce thicker hair. It's also shown that a scalp massage helps to dilute blood vessels beneath the skin.

7. Not adding some kind of steam treatment

I sit under a steamer, or shower cap for at least 30 minutes after applying my oils. If I want to do an extreme haul or treatment, I leave my oil on overnight under a shower cap and a bonnet and continue on my wash day routine the next day. The next morning, I shampoo my hair in deep condition on my hair, moisturize and style my hair or put it in a protective style for a week or two. The next important way I love to use hair growth oils is in between my wash day routine.

I normally just boil some water, grab my three growth oils, mix them, and then put them in the hot water. Let it just warm up for a bit, and then I apply it on my scalp, going in with my spray and hair growth oils. Now I normally do this routine just once or twice a week in between my wash day routine, and then after that, I will just give myself a great scalp massage, just to stimulate blood flow.
